Drink Your Water ~ Winter Season/Hump Day Reminders
This past week since after Christmas I found my small sniffles grow into a full-on cold.
Last night, as I hacked out mucus filled coughs throughout the length of my sixty minute yoga class at CorePower Yoga and received stares from the perfect ladies seated in the front row and around me like I should not be there - I realized I actually probably wasn't.
So today, as much as I wanted to continue going full speed i.e. attending 2 yoga classes, putting in 8 hours of work and 2 hours of productivity etc. etc...I did not. I did the opposite and rested indoors all day, especially since it was raining outdoors... which would have made my cold especially worse.
I am not a baby when it comes to illnesses, but it is so important to employ a regular self-care routine and consistently take care of ourselves throughout the year, especially during the cold, bitter, winter season.
It is so easy during the Holidays and the Wintertime to neglect your health and NOT DRINK ENOUGH WATER or GET ENOUGH SLEEP.
The sky is always dark, and we lose track of when the hours, so we often rest too late and get up not early enough. There are Holiday and family things to get to. Oftentimes, it is too cold to move around as much so we neglect to drink the proper amount of water we need plus the cold causes deep dehydration in our skin and system.
I don't drink anymore and have a normal schedule and still found myself sick... and possibly getting the people around me sick. So please do us all a favor and follow my tips and reminders on staying healthy this winter season and let me know if there is anything I missed or anything that works for you that helps you perform at your maximum throughout and after peak season!
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR STAYING HEALTHY - REMINDERS
1. Drink 8 full glasses of water. I recommend an app tracker, a sticky note, or a large Stanley Cup - I heard those are really popular.
2. Sleep Early and Get 8 Hours of Sleep - Even with the Holidays and vacation time it is important to stick to a regular-ish schedule and not deviate too far from it so when it is time to pick it back up again, it would not be difficult.
3. Exercise - We know the gym is hard to get to during the Holidays but there is no point in putting it off. Develop a short workout routine or attend a class or two during the Holidays and ease into a more consistent schedule afterwards.
4. Eat Dessert - My personal favorite. I cannot skip dessert and just decided to put it on the list.
5. To-Do Lists: When I am around family and friends and have downtime, I find myself more creative and less organized, so I made it a point to write my To-Dos and creative ideas down so I can get to them when I have time. I find it helpful as well to start daunting projects in small steps during the lull of the Holidays.
6. Smile: Who's the grumpy grumpaloon?! After the Holidays it is easy to lose the strong positive spirit, we develop during the year in anticipation of going back to work but keeping positive and just smiling is so important. It is not so bad! Spring is only 3 months away! Just keep on keeping on and we be alright.
7. Play with Your Pets - I noticed my pets sleeping a lot more during the Winter and me losing my mind indoors so it is important to spend some quality playing with your pets and taking them on short walks or to the park outside. We often discount our pets being restful as they don't need the exercise but that could not be further from the truth, they are just waiting for us to get them out the door.
All in all I noticed a certain level of anxiety I personally feel when the weather gets cold, during the Holidays and after and I also noticed how everyone else seem to share similar sentiments year after year. I deeply believe the more we refine our physical and mental self-care routine and attend to our daily needs the more successful and equipped we will be to tackle our day no matter what time of the year it is.
Hope this helps!
